Who you are: The Academic Director of the CIEE Florence Center is responsible for the highest levels of academic quality, customer satisfaction and success of courses designed and taught at the CIEE Study Center in Florence, Italy. In coordination with the Center Director, the position is responsible for coordinating all aspects of CIEE courses, as well as for long- range course planning, course evaluation, and course development. The Academic Director also serves as a Registrar. Programs in which the Academic Director may be involved include Semester, Summer and short-term study abroad programs; faculty-led (FAC) programs; custom programs, High School programs (HSSA); as well as other types of educational CIEE programs. What you’ll do: Design and implement the curriculum, evaluate all aspects of the academic program, propose needed changes, select, and evaluate instructors, design and implement appropriate orientation activities and other co-curricular programs. Exercise academic quality control for CIEE courses, monitoring quality of instruction, academic integrity, an appropriate degree of difficulty of the academic program, appropriate assessment of student work, academic policy compliance and standards of grading. Ensure that all CIEE courses comply with the CIEE academic policies. Oversee and coordinate the academic program in cooperation with local institutions and sending partner schools. Select, onboard and train new CIEE instructors and professors regarding CIEE Academic Policies and processes. Design and implement workshops and professional development activities for CIEE faculty. Participate in the determination of selection criteria for participants and program requirements. Design and run the necessary academic policy sessions during orientation for all programs including host institution policies and teaching/learning styles. Create a site academic calendar with a detailed timeline of academic requirements such as add/drop, withdrawal, midterm, and final exam schedule, etc. Organize course schedules (class hours and classroom use) for CIEE courses for all programs. Teach up to three 45-hour courses each academic year, in the areas of expertise. Supervise all functionality and arrangements of CANVAS. Manage requests for special academic exceptions, academic complaints, grade appeals, etc. Communicate to the Center Director any unusual situations in areas of responsibility. Manage information and services related to student visas. Obtain letters of acceptance for VISAs from host institutions Supervise the arrangements of tutorials of language and/or content courses with students and tutors. Participate in overnight and daylong excursions with students, in conjunction with other CIEE staff members and faculty. Crisis and Emergency: in rotation with the other center staff, carry the 24-hour emergency telephone. Assist as needed in the development and implementation of any CIEE new programs, including customized programs, faculty-lead, HSSA, HSOB, etc. Service as the main point of contact for any students requests for special academic exceptions, complaints, appeal etc. Create cases in Salesforce and communicate promptly to the Portland office and to the sending school any student academic difficulties, discipline issues, attendance problems, or unauthorized absences. Under the supervision of the Center Director, manage the academic annual budget for all programs, monitor budgeted spending and submit forecasts. Define all aspects of the CIEE course offer for all programs. Ensure student satisfaction for CIEE courses by running, reading, and reacting to student course evaluation forms to continually maintain and improve standards across all academic areas. Advise students on course selection prior to the beginning of each semester, organize course registration activities and monitor changes in enrollment in coordination with staff at our local host institutions. Participate in the academic advising process. Facilitate students’ communication with their parents and appropriate authorities at their home and/or sending schools regarding academic matters Participate in the writing of academic program materials (promotional materials, catalogue copy, bulletins, handbooks, course syllabi, curriculum vitae of instructors and professors, etc.) Responding in a timely manner to all questions, issues, problems, needs of any constituents (students, host and home schools, resident staff, parents), as assigned Maintain updated database of course syllabi Design and implement workshops and professional development activities for CIEE faculty Exercise academic quality control for CIEE courses, monitoring quality of instruction,academic integrity, appropriate degree of difficulty of the academic program, appropriate assessment of student work, academic policy compliance and standards of grading. Ensure that all CIEE courses comply with the CIEE academic policies Ensure student satisfaction for CIEE courses by running, reading, and reacting to the student course evaluation forms to continually maintain and improve standards across all academic areas. Manage grade explanation forms and grade appeals. Exercise sound judgment in his/her interactions with students and sending school officials during all aspects of the onsite study abroad experience. Exercise judgment in knowing when to bring an issue to the attention of the Center Director What you’ll bring: Given the fast pace of the work involved, the right candidate, in addition to the following, will demonstrate flexibility in terms of scheduling and hours, as well as collaborative spirit, patience, kindness and a keen sense of humor. Readiness to grow and develop yourself, our client group and our Company Ph.D. required Legal right to work and reside in Italy Love for and vast knowledge of Florence and Tuscany Love of teaching Fluency in Italian and English (both written and verbal) Professional work experience in an international education-related position Familiarity with U.S. higher education and direct experience with U.S. college and university students Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to communicate to multiple audiences Meticulous attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and commitment to customer service Demonstrated integrity, initiative, and professionalism.
